The best advice from experienced homeschool parents

Don’t let "NO teaching experience" stop you!

I am not a native English speaker. I learnt how to speak English at the age of 21 and never thought I could teach English to anyone, especially young children.

However, without teaching experience and expensive reading curriculums, I taught my 6-year-old son to read in 2 months and 4-year-old daughter to read before turning 5 with ONE BOOK and 4 SIMPLE STEPS I used everyday.

If you don’t know where to start, what to do, which to use, or you don’t want to spend money on the expensive reading curriculums that you are not sure will work for your kids, use this free eBook as your guideline.

At the beginning like many other moms, I focused on searching for the best reading curriculum to teach my kids how to read. Through trials and errors, I learnt being CONSISTENT and creating a LEARNING HABIT at the beginning were more IMPORTANT than curriculums.

Frequently Asked Questions.

As soon as they are ready and show their interesting in reading! Dr. Timothy Shanahan, the literacy expert, shared the best practices for teaching reading and writing. He said “sometimes, parents are told early teaching is harmful, but it isn’t true. You simply can’t introduce literacy too early. I started reading to my own children on the days they were each born.”

Knowing the alphabet is important in learning to read. Some kids can learn early. Some kids can learn later. However, in general, you can introduce ABCs around 2 years old like “ABC” songs. Some parents start even earlier than that because kids learn through repetition.

Exposing them through books is the best way. Reading aloud to them every day builds their letters and sounds recognition. It helps build their vocabulary skills. Beside reading, you also can use flashcards, puzzles, building blocks and many other alphabet games.

This eBook will give the full detail answer to this question.

Parent is the first teacher of a child’s life. You already speak the language and are able to read. Of course, you can teach your child to read. Let’s put it this way! When your child goes to school, who will help them with all the homework after school? Teachers teach them the basis but don’t have enough time to hear each kid read everyday. Parents must involve and find time to make sure kids read correctly. If you can do this, of course, you can teach them to read.

It took me six months teaching my daughter to read at the age of 4. It took me 2 months to teach my son at the age of 6. They both learnt from the same book and techniques. It is depending on their ages and how much they know pre-reading such as alphabets, letters’ sounds and names, phonics, ect. It takes longer if you teach kids before they can comprehend the meaning of words and stories. The important part of teach reading is choosing age-appropriate books for your child.
